Grapefruit Diet
Those seeking weight loss since the early 1930’s have used
the Grapefruit Diet, also referred to as the Hollywood Diet. Based
upon the premise that grapefruit helps accelerate fat burning by
increasing metabolism, the Grapefruit Diet has enjoyed great success
for over fifty years.
Though once believed to have originated with the Mayo Clinic, official
statements recanting those claims have been released, however clinical
studies have shown that those who adhere to the diet do have significant
weight loss compared to those who don't. It is believed that grapefruit
helps lower insulin levels and regulates blood sugar. This in turn
utilizes carbohydrates more efficiently and enables greater fat
burning.
Basically, the diet includes drinking plenty of water each day
and adding as many grapefruits and grapefruit juice to your diet
as desired. You must drink at least 64 ounces of water per day.
It is believed that as your body burns fat, you must drink water
to rid yourself of the fat and toxins that are released, so drinking
water is critical to your success.
Additionally, there is a strict regimen of required foods that
must be eaten and the diet lasts for twelve days. The foods listed
are the minimum that are required to be eaten, however, you can
add more foods from the allowed list to your diet if you choose.
The foods are selected by their ability to burn fat, so it is vital
the success of your diet that you eat the combination of foods that
are recommended.
Here is a breakdown of the diet.
Breakfast
For breakfast, you must eat at least ½ a grapefruit or eight
ounces of unsweetened grapefruit juice, two eggs (cooked any style)
and two slices of bacon. It is very important that you eat the bacon
as this helps burn fat.
Lunch
Lunch consists of ½ a grapefruit or eight ounces of unsweetened
juice, salad with salad dressing and any type and quantity of meat
that you choose.
Dinner consists of ½ a grapefruit or eight ounces of unsweetened
grapefruit juice, salad with salad dressing or your choice of red
or green vegetable (may be cooked in butter), and meat or fish.
You may also have one cup of coffee or tea.
If you need a snack before bed it is recommended that you drink
eight ounces of either skim or low-fat milk or tomato juice.
